Forgiveness

John RothJune 22, 202539:44

Matthew 18: 21 - 35

Compassion that cancels the debt and releases the offender restores relationships and frees the forgiver, because true forgiveness is an attitude that leads to costly action, not sentimental forgetting, excusing, or scorekeeping. Forgiveness displays the inner life it springs from and creates space for justice, reconciliation, and healing that punishment alone cannot accomplish. Mercy preserves social flourishing by resisting vindictiveness and the impulse to permanently brand others as irredeemable. Because God pays our debt and embraces sinners, we can offer mercy to others, refuse to rehearse grievances, and pursue restored community even amid deep hurt.
