Jesus Calls His First Disciples

John RothMarch 9, 202543:00

Matthew 4: 18 - 25

True discipleship demands immediate surrender to Christ’s call, not merely intellectual assent, because the King chooses followers and summons them to leave old identities and occupations to follow him. The gospel is good news that breaks into history, declaring the kingdom present and redeeming creation rather than offering mere spiritual techniques. Following Jesus requires ruthless renunciation of self and lesser loyalties so that grace, not achievement, defines us, which produces humility instead of fanaticism. Christ’s life heals, rescues, and points forward to the resurrection that renews people and the whole created order, and his call reshapes our purpose, relationships, and hope.
