Catching Smoke
Searching for Meaning?
John RothSeptember 1, 202433:17
Ecclesiastes 1Human striving often feels like chasing smoke, leaving us restless and unsatisfied as seasons and pursuits recycle without lasting meaning. Earthly pleasures, wealth, fame, and work never fully satisfy because creation bears a futility that exposes our need for something beyond ourselves. God alone gives ultimate purpose, and fearing God and keeping his commands anchors life amid the cycles. Jesus enters the world’s futility, bears judgment on our behalf, and by his death and resurrection breaks the spiral so that believers receive forgiveness, new identity, and a promised future. True meaning comes not from human achievement but from union with Christ and life directed by him.
