The Religion of Work & Leisure
John RothFebruary 16, 202041:01
Exodus 20: 8 - 11Our labor and play become idols when they promise identity, significance, or salvation and never satisfy. Rest is a gift that comes from Christ’s finished work and not from perfect productivity or curated leisure. Sabbath rest means being satisfied with what God has accomplished, declaring freedom from slavery to performance, and trusting that God can hold the world without our constant striving. Leisure can become legalistic when it competes for status or turns into another performance. God’s rhythm of work and rest is lived out in daily pauses, communal Sabbath practices, and receiving grace instead of seeking worth through achievement.
