Away in a Manger

Matthew 1: 18 - 25

The King of heaven comes as a vulnerable child, showing that God is both transcendent and intimately near. Jesus’ claim to Lordship provokes extreme responses instead of polite indifference, and human hearts resist authority because we want to be in charge. God chooses the weak, the little, and the unlikely to overturn human pride so salvation looks foolish to the world but wise for the humble. The Bible coheres around Jesus, who fulfills Israel’s story and lives what we cannot, and following him requires ongoing struggle to surrender our control and receive his wisdom, righteousness, and redemption.
